Spam & SpamAssassin FAQs
How can I better manage received unsolicited email
messages?
Below is a technique to more quickly identify and delete unsolicited email messages:
- While viewing your in box, locate the menu option to view only unread messages.
- Then click on the column "Subject" to sort unread email messages by subject.
Sort by "from" may also be helpful.
- Using this method you can more quickly identify spam messages and delete
them in groups instead of one at a time.
- Enjoy!
What is the
server policy on spam?
Your hosting program does not permit the sending of unsolicited bulk commercial
email or spam referencing your domain name.
What
is SpamAssassin (SA)?
- SpamAssassin is a special installation. Contact your service manager for
details. There are three SA programs available:
- SpamAssassin lite - All email with spam relevancy scores above 5 (or as set in the control panel, sacp.your_domain) are
marked with the word "spam:"
- SpamAssassin redirect - All email is marked as above, and moved to POP
account "spam" for inspection, or management via MailAdmin.
- SpamAssassin autodelete - All email with spam relevancy scores above 5 (or as set in the control panel) are "deleted," and cannot be retrieved.
SpamAssassin does not delete or filter spam in any respect.
SpamAssassin is used to identify and tag spam for POP accounts within a
domain.
SpamAssassin uses over 100 rules to analyze email messages, then assigns each messages a score.
If a message scores above "5" SpamAssassin prefixes
the word "spam:" to the subject line. For example:
- "spam: Win a trip to McMurdo, Antarctica today!"
Why tag spam instead of deleting it?
SpamAssassin is a powerful tool, but it is not perfect.
It will correctly identify 99% of the the spam messages you receive. However,
some legitimate email may be tagged as spam, and some messages may slide through
untagged because they were written specifically to get past SpamAssassin rules.
If you order SpamAssassin redirect, email marked as spam will be moved
to a "spam" POP account automatically.
- Using your email management control panel (MailAdmin),
you may control whether email redirected to the "spam" POP account
is automatically saved, deleted, or bounced back to sender.
- Within MailAdmin, see the [ Help ] link at top for descriptions on how
to manage "Settings" for the POP account "spam."
- "Settings" control whether email is saved or not saved
(Status "on" or "off").
- Likewise, "settings" can control whether email bounces
back to sender unsaved (Status "Expiry" settings).
- See also "Can I change SpamAssassin settings?"
below.
I forward my email elsewhere. Will SpamAssassin
tag it first?
No. Forwarded email messages are not analyzed by SpamAssassin because aliased
and forwarded messages are not processed in any way by the web server (they
are simply redirected).
How do I filter email that is tagged as "spam:"?
See your email software instructions ("Help" menu) for the term "filter"
or "rules."
- Most email software programs include the option to set simple rules or filters
for email messages (e.g., redirect to trash, play sound, etc.).
- For filter purposes, all SpamAssassin tagged email messages include in the
subject line the the word: spam:
- Example outlook filter/rule
set up.
Can I change SpamAssassin settings?
SpamAssassin includes a control panel allowing you to control SpamAssassin general
settings, and create white lists, and black lists (accept and deny email lists). Once installed, you may access your control panel here: http://sacp.enter_your_domain_name

Likewise, SpamAssassin can be controlled in many ways within your account,
to include assigning SpamAssassin control to all users (set by default ), or
single accounts. Contact your service manager for details on how to fine tune
SpamAssassin once installed.
